The Qualities Leaders Need to Successfully Navigate Transition

As we slide into fall, a natural season of transition, many of us may experience changes within the workplace. Whether it be growth into new areas, a reduction in force to meet the status quo, or something completely unexpected and out of the ordinary, some leaders will crumble under the pressure, while others will navigate these transitions in a flawless fashion.

The ability to withstand the winds of change is not innate, it can be learned, practiced, and perfected. Just as things around you are always changing, so too can you. As a leader, it is imperative to your company’s and employees’ success that you are able to face the inevitable changes that come your way. So what, exactly, are the characteristics that successful leaders embody during times of transition?

  • They embrace the reality that change is a constant.

  • They stay agile, nimble and fast in order to maximize what's ahead in new and often unpredictable ways.

  • They prepare for a myriad of possibilities by constantly learning and improving.

  • They demonstrate grit and resilience.

  • They bounce back from setbacks quickly rather than wallowing in "what was".

  • They are flexible and try on new ideas with enthusiasm.

  • They look for the exploration of new ideas rather than being in the "this is the way we do it paradigm of thinking"

  • They have an insatiable learning drive and curiosity.

  • They ask a lot of questions and stay open to where those questions may lead them or the organization.

  • They ask for help and accept help when offered.

  • They have a realistic/optimistic mindset.

  • They are willing to change that can/should be changed while preserving the fundamental principles of honesty, integrity, and treating people with respect and dignity.

  • They consider the impact of decisions on others and act accordingly.

  • They reflect upon successes and failures and use that information to do better.

  • They celebrate their victories, no matter how small, and stay humble.
