Creating and Executing Your Vision In The New Year

This time of year is often synonymous with reflection and planning. So it's the ideal moment to outline your vision for your organization in the upcoming year. But to know what you are working toward and get excited about executing your vision, you must first clarify precisely what you're aiming to achieve. Are you painting a clear picture of the vision for you and your team? Where do you intend to take them this upcoming year? How do you plan to motivate yourself and your teammates in 2023?

Vision work is paramount when leading a team toward success, and these four aspects of the process will help you craft a clear and impactful vision for your organization.

1| Ideation

Think about the big picture. What are your dreams? What are you aspiring toward this year? What makes you feel most excited? Dream big, but not so big that your goals are unattainable. You want these ideas to be what you might consider "a reach," but they shouldn't be entirely out of reach. Solicit feedback from surveys, brainstorming sessions, and team-building exercises. Convey your ideas to the people who will help make your vision happen, and then start turning your vision into reality.

2| Visuals

Define why your vision is important by creating a slide deck or a vision board. These visual reminders help you hone in on your goals and ensure you are constantly working toward them. In addition, they allow you to include anything and everything you are dreaming about for your upcoming year without limitations. Place these visuals where you can see them regularly, so you can be constantly reminded of what you are trying to accomplish and manifest it. Then, whenever you feel yourself straying from your path toward success, you can revisit your goals with a simple glance at what you originally wanted.

3| Benefits

Now it's time to reflect on the benefits you will gain when you make your vision a reality. For example, will your goal be to earn more money? Grow your business exponentially? Do you want to take more time to relax or devote yourself more deeply to family and friends? Whatever the benefit, it is important to spend time brainstorming and visualizing it. When you are aware of how achieving your goals will be beneficial, you are far more likely to be motivated to go out and achieve everything you planned for in this upcoming year.

4| Action Steps

You have a clear idea about what you want to accomplish, created the visuals to remind yourself of your goals, and reflected on all the benefits you will reap from bringing your vision to life. But how are you going to make it happen? Answering this question will set you on the right track toward success and achieving your goals this year. Your action plan can include a series of small steps, or perhaps it consists of several giant leaps. Whatever way you intend to reach your goals, be sure to outline your path first. With a plan in place, you will likely find yourself effectively working toward success.

When you are creating a vision, goal-setting, and creating action steps this year, use this example of our process as a guide:

Perhaps you have always dreamt of running a marathon and committed to that goal this year. You've dreamt big, but you want to ensure the timeline you set for yourself is manageable. You've spent time soliciting feedback from those who know you best and have their support.

Next, you created a vision board with this goal and placed it in an area where you will see it daily. You can begin to visualize yourself crossing the finish line and have spent time considering all of the benefits. Committing yourself to this goal will change your mental and physical wellness. In addition, you understand the sense of pride you will have in yourself once you've reached it.

Finally, you've begun to create action steps. And once you've done this, you realize this big dream requires reaching many smaller goals first. It's been years since you've run even a mile, so you begin working toward that goal. Next, you decide to complete a 5k, a 10k, and a half marathon. You understand that you need to reach a level of comfortability with long-distance running before signing up for that marathon, and eventually, you will. And once you've reached a point where your smaller goals become maintenance, it's time for you to take on that marathon.

In most cases, your lofty business goals may feel like attempting to complete a marathon. But by breaking down your large goals into smaller, more attainable ones, you will reach a point where you can surmount your biggest dreams.
